Sharing Moment
As long as I can remember I had two best friends – Sophie and Charlotte. Charlotte called me ‘best pal with Marabone’. This catch phase came from a TV ad for Pal (dog food!), and from a very young age (maybe 8-9 years old) this phase was adapted to express how we felt about one another. Char was amazing at telling her friends and her family that she loved them very much. Every letter, phone call, message would end with either big hugs, kisses and love you…

(Charlotte is either 8-9 girls (even I can’t tell the difference at this age!) from the left, bottom row) My first memories of Char (or was it Soph?) was on my 5th birthday. Our class had a tradition - children would bring in a birthday cake to share with the class.
I remember the teacher bringing out my birthday cake and Charlotte (or Sophie), shouting out “that is not a really birthday cake – it’s a Swiss roll with a candle in it!” We joked about this for many years to come. These two confident, outspoken little girls were to become my best friends.
The Barge Holiday, 1983
This was a holiday which we went on with Uncle Norman, my father, my brother Jamie and Jo, Soph and Char. We had so much fun together with ‘the Dads’. Charlotte and I spend many years reminiscing of all the fun on this holiday – make dinner for the dads, boys was this an ordeal, and Jamie falling in the freezing cold water!

Pizza Hut Club, Leeds, 1990
The six girls formed the ‘Pizza Hut Club’ over an enjoyable pizza at, you guessed it Pizza Hut! The girls were Louise Braham, Sarah Saunders, Caroline Flitterman, Katie Krantz and Sophie and Charlotte Berger. This was a special bond between all of us and we vowed to be best friends for ever. Charlotte was very excited about Pizza Hut Club get together!
This photo was taken in Charlottes flat in her first year in Leeds. This was a Pizza Hut Club reunion. At this time Caroline and Sarah were also at Leeds Uni, Soph and Lou were at Manchester University and I was in London working for Haymarket Magazines. We found it highly amusing that each one of us had become a smoker!

vividly re-call having to obtain any old black or navy men's jackets we
could scrounge which Kate, Soph and Charl would spend hours, in the
bedroom, embroidering and sequinning. After several rehearsals (and
these usually included every song from the Show!) which took place in
the kitchen - usually when I was trying to make the dinner, they would
then put on black fishnet tights, their jackets, make their hair
'wild', make up their faces and then ask to be taken to the Theatre
Royal to see The Rocky Horror Show. It was a frightening sight.....
particularly for the poor taxi driver who was tasked with taking them
on the journey from East Bridgford.

New York, 1994
MRB - I
remember this well. Katie was one of the first of Charl's friends
to come over to New York after she came over. Charl always said
that two of the best things I introduced her to was sushi and
rollerblading. It took her a while to catch on to skating, but like
most things, once she built up her confidence she became very
proficient. Which is more than can be said for me. Just moments
after this picture was taken, we all skated down the west side
esplanade (now completely redeveloped) past the Twin Towers to Battery
Park. On the way back (probably whilst going a little too fast), a twig
got stuck in my wheels and I went flying! Charlotte, to my knowledge,
although she may have wobbled a bit, never fell.
