Careby, Winter 1972
Sophie
- I can't remember being held in Grandpas arms. I do know that it was
taken on the Farm at Careby and probably when we were around 6mths old
...... the same age as Sam is at the moment. I am not even 100%
sure who is who but I think Charl is on the right!! Sam Sam
definitely looks like his mummy and aunty!
Marlow, 1973
Jo Sadie - Char in blue, Soph in red. That was their colours and how people used to tell them apart.
Careby, July 1975
Sophie - Charl and I were just 3 years old in this picture. Nearly the same age as Sol. Dressed up as Babushkas - Grandma eat your heart out!!!! Charl is on the bike. Solly's love for bikes has obviously been inherited from his mummy!
Nottingham Girls High School, Dec 77
Sandra (and Laurie) Flitterman
- Judy and I were pregnant at the same time, and Sophie, Charlotte and
Caroline were born within about 4 weeks of each other in the summer of
1972. They became friends almost from birth and grew up together in
Nottingham, went to school together, were batmitzvahed together and
stayed close friends throughout university and then afterwards when
they all lived in London.
In their first year at the Nottingham Girls High School when they were 5 yrs old, they only went for half a day on Fridays. With another mother, Judy and I took it in turns to collect the girls from school at lunch time on Friday afternoons and bring them home for lunch. At that time, Sophie and Charlotte were really identical, and the only way I could tell one from the other was to look at their shoes as Sophie wore red shoes and Charlotte wore blue ones. I would then take the girls to meet the other 2 mums at the lee Stadium for a skating session. This entailed ages spent in the freezing cold stadium trying (not always successfully) to lace up their boots and then struggling to take them off again afterwards. Of course, I could never tell who was Sophie and who was Charlotte when they were wearing identical white skating boots. The girls loved these sessions, but we mums were delighted when they finally stayed at school all day on Fridays.
This photo was taken in the school hall and I'm still not sure whether Charlotte is on Caroline's left or right, as I can't see their shoes! (I think Charlotte might be on Caroline's left).
Feeding the Calves, Summer 1976
Norman Berger - I remember when Joanna, Charl and Sophie loved to help me feed the calves at the farm in Careby. The calves were housed in individual pens and they each had their own little feeding bucket.
I would mix up the calves "SMA" milk powder each according to their age had a smaller or larger amount of the mixture in their individual buckets.
The three girls would take the buckets to each calf but I remember that Charl would get upset that all the calves were not getting the same amount! However, much I tried to explain that too much calf milk would upset their tummies!
The only way to pacify her was to let her give all the calves some water so that as she would say "they won't be thirsty"
I guess this was one of the indications of her caring nature.
